Far Mulberry Unit, Outer Mulberry
History: The Far Mulberry was built as part of the
temporary harbour walls used during the D-Day landings, but this
unit never made it as far as France. The Mulberry is located
about three miles off Pagham, near Bognor Regis and rests in an east-west direction covering a distance of
about 45 metres (140 feet). Made out of reinforced
concrete that has gradually degraded over time, leaving sharp
metal spikes protruding from them in places that would easily
puncture and stab a wetsuit or drysuit so make sure your buoyancy is under
control.

Scuba Diving: The Far Mulberry is a great
wreck dive for every level of diver, and only a short boat trip
from one of the local boat charters. I always use
Mulberry Divers or
Southern coast charter, with trips out to the Mulberry
taking approx. 20min from East Beach Selsey. Once at the shot
you make your decent down onto a sandy sea bed at approx. 12m,
visibility on this wreck can be anything from 1 - 10+ meters
depending on recent weather conditions.
Once at the bottom you can follow a mooring
chain and line, which leads you straight to the wreck (always
check with the skipper if your not sure) once at the wreckage I
head out keeping the Far Mulberry on my right shoulder until I
get back to the beginning, fish life on this dive site is
amazing and most local fisherman treat this site with respect,
however fish line, lobster pots and netting sometimes appear.
